About Us

A Short Story About Us

In 1994, Muffi Chanfrau retired from teaching and, following her retirement, discovered she still possessed a deep passion for making a meaningful impact within her community. A lifelong educator at heart, she was driven by a strong desire to nurture and educate young minds. Recognizing a significant need for remedial reading and math support within the community and school district, she made the decision to establish a tutoring center in Ormond Beach, Florida. The center began modestly, staffed by Muffi and a small team of teachers. Over the years, both the tutoring center and its business operations expanded, serving the broader community, the local school district, and the Title I program. The Title I program was initiated in the early 2000s.

In 2002, the Volusia County School District Title I Coordinator approached A+ Tutoring, Inc. and another local tutoring center to develop a comprehensive plan to address learning deficiencies in math and reading. This plan was intended for presentation to 12 principals from Volusia County Private Schools and the District Title I Department. The coordinator had determined that previous Title I interventions, including sending computers home with students and organizing small group sessions after school, were not yielding the desired results. Seeking a more effective approach, he engaged external partners to find a solution that would better serve Title I students.

A+ Tutoring, Inc. responded by designing a structured program based on clearly identified standards and delivered by certified teachers who specialize in reading and math. The tutoring services utilized a one-on-one instructional model, supported by research and an evidence-based curriculum. Collaboration was prioritized through direct communication with classroom teachers, parents, schools, and the district Title I Department. Progress and achievement were systematically measured, with regular assessments and progress reports provided every six weeks to ensure accountability and continuous improvement.

To pilot the program, A+ Tutoring, Inc. agreed to provide tutoring services at both the participating schools and at its Ormond Beach center. The results demonstrated the program’s effectiveness.

As a result, A+ Tutoring, Inc. was selected by the School Principals and the district as the provider for the inaugural Third Party Non-Public School Title I Tutoring program, serving 19 private schools during the 2002-2003 academic year. Since then, A+ Tutoring, Inc. has been awarded the Title I Non-Public-School Contract with Volusia County Schools, holding this distinction from 2002 to 2016, again from 2017 through 2022, and is currently an approved vendor through 2027.

As of 2024, Muffi has retired from A+ Tutoring. The company will continue to build on its foundational principles and vision, striving to positively impact students by supporting their academic growth and success, one student at a time.

From the Air Force to Education: Maria Kraft Leads a Legacy of Learning:

When Maria Kraft retired from the U.S. Air Force after 27 years of service, she didn’t slow down—she redirected her mission. Trading her uniform for a new kind of leadership, Kraft brought her discipline, strategic vision, and commitment to service into the world of education. She joined the district in 2014 and retired from the School District in January 2024 and now serves as the CEO of A+ Tutoring, a trusted community tutoring organization serving local students since 1994.

Long before she ever took the helm of the tutoring company, Maria was already part of the community she now leads. After relocating her family to the district during her military career, she quickly became involved with local schools, families, and civic organizations, building relationships grounded in mentorship, and service.

“Education has always been at the heart of strong communities,” Kraft said.
“When I transitioned from military life, I knew I wanted to continue serving—but this time, through empowering students and supporting teachers.”

It’s important to note that while Kraft was holding a leadership role with the district before retirement, she did not influence the district’s procurement decisions. All procurement contracts, including those for educational services, are determined by an independent Evaluation Committee and approved by the School Board. This ensures transparency, fairness, and a clear separation between service providers and decision-makers. Kraft’s role is focused solely on delivering high-quality educational support once contracts are awarded.

Under her leadership, A+ Tutoring continues its mission of partnering closely with the school district to serve Title I students and those with special learning needs. The organization’s programs are designed to close achievement gaps, provide individualized academic support, and create opportunities for success for every student—regardless of background or circumstance.

A cornerstone of Kraft’s vision is also to uplift educators themselves. Through her initiative, certified teachers from local schools are invited to serve as tutors, allowing them to supplement their income while continuing to do what they do best—teach, inspire, and make a difference.

“Teachers are the backbone of education,” Kraft emphasized.
“They know the students, they understand the curriculum, and they care deeply. Giving them opportunities to grow professionally and financially helps strengthen our entire school community.”

Since stepping into her role, Kraft has modernized operations, expanded outreach programs, and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to the values that have guided it for over three decades—service, integrity, and excellence. Her leadership reflects her Air Force roots, where precision, purpose, and teamwork are non-negotiable.

Colleagues describe Kraft as a “mission-driven leader with a heart for kids.” Parents describe her as approachable, compassionate, and deeply invested in every child’s success.

For Maria Kraft, the classroom has replaced the command post—but the mission remains the same: to serve, to lead, and to lift others higher.
